Depressing news

After a morning job interview in downtown Boston, I stopped in for a quick coffee at the Starbucks in Government Center. As I sat at the counter and stared out the window, I saw this little scene and had to take a photo of it (with my cell phone).

I could scarcely believe how spinning-newspaper-cliche this looked.

Cruel and unusual punishment: hyacinths in the snow

Bostonians got teased with a hint of spring last Friday when the temps went up to the 60s. It was really glorious.

The hyacinths I'd repotted are in full bloom right now and my entire apartment is filled with their sweet aroma. It is a bit of cognitive dissonance to wake up to the scent of hyacinths while hearing an army of snowblowers outside.

Powder snow for Christmas

The aftermath of that spectacular pre-Christmas blizzard was a full morning of shoveling. Too bad I wasn't on the slopes! It was perfect powder.

Sunday blizzard

I know this picture looks blurry—it's not. It's just snowing that hard. The snow we were supposed to get on Friday was a lot weaker than most of us were anticipating, but the "little bit" of snow on Sunday ended up packing quite a punch.

We ended up with about nine inches of fluffy snow. Not enough to cause any real trouble but just the right amount to make a mess.
