茶叶蛋

Tried something new today that I heartily recommend -- Chinese Tea Eggs. You basically take a lightly-hardboiled egg, crack the shell, and simmer the egg for hours in a dark solution of spices, soy sauce, and black tea. It ends up giving the egg a beautiful marbled finish and infuses the entire egg with a light savory seasoning with a tea undertone. I am a big fan of eggs and to me this is the King of Eggs. Highly recommended.

Blueberry jam on buttermilk pancakes

It was very labor-intensive to pick the blueberries under the summer sun while trying to swat away the biting horseflies, but it was so worth it for the winter payoff. Nothing like a homemade taste of summer when there's a foot of snow on the ground.

Shabu-shabu chez Sauce

My housemates and I noticed that shabu shabu has become quite chic here in the Boston area lately, kind of like the new tapas or sushi trend in restaurants. But really, it's just hotpot—dunking food into a hot broth and letting it cook, one of the best comfort foods for cold weather. So we had our own shabu shabu lunch at home.

I should probably mention that the nickname for our apartment is The Awesomesauce, which I sometimes shorten to “The ‘Sauce.” We have not yet determined the epicurean nature of the Sauce, only that it is Awesome.

My new favorite site and a near-brush with celebrity

My new favorite blog. Yes, this is a very shameless plug. My three friends and I love to cook, and this is our blog. The three of them live in the same house (both floors of a double-decker) and I’ll be moving in as the fourth resident sometime soon. We call that house “The Awesomesauce” simply because we couldn’t think of any other name. Hence “Awesomesauce Eats,” because we eat. A lot. We’ve been thinking for a while now it’s time we started a food blog, and finally she-who-calls-herself-Plumduff made us our new home. You have to blog what you love, right?

This is what August means.

This is what August means.

My delicious dinner for the past few nights, I could live off this stuff all year. But really it’s the rarity of good, fresh tomatoes that makes this simple dish so precious.
The only downside of all this is that I can’t eat tomatoes any other time of year. That stuff they sell in supermarkets, that red-colored styrofoam mealy grossness, is totally unpalatable to me. I have to eat an entire year’s worth of tomatoes in basically a two-to-three week window! It’s worth it :)

In case you’ve never heard of this simple salad before, here’s the “recipe”:

• A handful of right-off-the-vine tomatoes, sliced into eighths
• A bunch of fresh parsley, very roughly cut
• A heavy douse of Extra Virgin olive oil
• A little bit of salt

Fair warning: If you don’t make this with fresh ingredients and Extra Virgin olive oil, it’s going to taste gross.
