We here in the Boston area finally got our first real snowstorm of the year. Yes, “finally,” as I really look forward to winter snowfall. (It really does take a special kind of person to live in New England!) The snow was beautiful, perfect powder snow—the kind that’s a joy to ski or board on, a real breeze to shovel, but not so much fun to drive in. It sticks between your treads and everything.

The speed of snow accumulation mixed with bad mid-day timing of the storm meant a horrendous afternoon for most of us around here. There’s countless stories of people who had to abandon their cars ala ‘78 Blizz because traffic was stuck for four, five, six hours on unplowed roads. Ran into a coworker who couldn’t even make it home last night, and she definitely wasn’t the only one.

Somehow, very luckily, it only took me an hour to get home from work yesterday. Like most people I left work (in Waltham) right after lunch, just as the snow started coming down hard.

So I took some photos!

Cross-country skiing your way into Davis Square.

A not-so-good idea:

Biking your way onto Massachusetts Avenue. EEK!
