Depressing news

After a morning job interview in downtown Boston, I stopped in for a quick coffee at the Starbucks in Government Center. As I sat at the counter and stared out the window, I saw this little scene and had to take a photo of it (with my cell phone).

I could scarcely believe how spinning-newspaper-cliche this looked.

This photo was featured on UniversalHub on Wednesday, March 4th. Thanks Adam!

My new office

My new office

This is my new office. Every day, instead of hopping into my car and driving to work, I walk over to my dining room table and start to work. It's kind of a hoot checking out job listings while the Price is Right plays in the background.

This is pretty much the worst picture ever posted on a blog in the entire history of the internet. It’s underexposed and poorly composed. I know, I know.

Laid off

Laid off

I got laid off on Monday.

Though I knew this was coming for quite a while, getting a pink slip was still unpleasant.

I was just one of over 70,000 Americans who got laid off on Monday across a wide range of industries. It's scary. I suppose I should take some comfort in knowing I'm not alone right now--especially judging by the long lines at the unemployment office I visited this morning--but I don't. I'd really prefer everyone be able to go to work.

As someone in front of me at the unemployment lines joked today: "When it comes to the economy, when you know someone who's been laid off, it's a recession. When you're the one who's been laid off, it's a depression."

All my office accoutrements neatly placed in a box, with a white folder detailing my severance package resting on top.

I still haven’t been able to open that box since I brought it home.

Such a busy summer

A different perspective on the usual skyline.

‘Tis the season for house work–it feels like I’ve barely had a moment to sit down and think. Our apartment was de-leaded earlier this summer and since then I’ve been hard at work re-painting our kitchen with my roomate. Any weekend when I haven’t been doing housework I’ve been on the road somewhere, it feels like. So I’m behind on updates. I have about four drafts saved that I just can’t bring myself to post yet.  Instead of keeping you guys waiting, here’s a brief on what I’ve been up to. (more…)

The death of journalism in America

The death of journalism in America

As my bio says, I’m just a newbie reporter. So perhaps it’s presumptuous of me to opine on the State of Journalism with only a few years of experience under my belt.

But something—okay, everything—bothered me when I read this post on Poynter.

“…But nothing journalists do will reverse the dark tides of popular cynicism. The wrecking balls destroying the credibility of the press cannot be stopped until we focus more attention on the credibility of those who are pulling the levers, including a public that has been conditioned, like rats in a Skinnerian dystopia, to hate us.”
